Why get an Assessment?

Getting an assessment can give valuable insights into how you or your child learns. This assesment may help open up funding for the individual being assessed and can lead to an Individualized Education Program to ensure their needs are being met in their learning environment.

We offer Educational Psychology Assessments, including assessing for Giftedness, Twice Exceptionality, ADHD, Learning and Cognitive Disabilities.

Educational Psychology Assessment: An educational psychology assessment is a comprehensive evaluation that helps understand a student's learning strengths and needs, including academic, cognitive, and socio-emotional functioning. It involves various methods like standardized tests, observations, and interviews to gather information about how a child learns and processes information. The goal is to identify potential learning disabilities, ADHD, or other factors impacting academic performance and overall well-being and include the following types of assessments:

  • ADHD Assessment: An ADHD assessment may be completed as part of an educational psychology assessment. It is a comprehensive evaluation process used to determine if someone meets the criteria for Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). It involves a combination of assessment tools, interviews, and observations to gather information about a person's behaviour, attention, and impulsivity, as well as their medical and family history.

  • Learning Disabilities Assessment: Learning Disabilities is a broad term that refers to a number of disorders that may affect the acquisition, organization, retention, understanding or use of verbal or nonverbal information. An educational psychology assessment can help detect learning disabilities and may lead to a diagnosis of Specific Learning Disorder (with impairment in reading, writing, and/or mathematics). Note: additional language used to describe learning disabilities includes dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia.

  • Giftedness Assessment: The Canadian Psychological Association states, “Giftedness is not a psychological diagnosis but rather a descriptive term. Psychologists and educational systems use this term to address the needs of these students. It allows for a better understanding and support of these students’ unique strengths and requirements to help them thrive academically and personally” (CPA, “Psychology Works” Fact Sheet: Giftedness in Children and Youth, 2024). An educational psychology assessment can help explore possible giftedness.

  • Twice-Exceptional (2e) Assessment: Twice-exceptional (2e) individuals are those who are both intellectually gifted and have a learning disability or other neurodivergent challenge (e.g. ADHD). An educational psychology assessment can help detect 2e students and learn their areas of strength and areas needing growth.
